Amr ibn Kulthum
Pre-Islamic
Amr ibn Kulhtum belongs to Taghlib tribe. His muallaqa (poem hung up on the Kabba) is one of the best poems. Amr was a highly respected chief and a brave knight. After a long life, he died in c. 40 Before Hegira (BH)/584 AD.
Imru' ul-Qays
Imru' ul-Qays is the most famous Arab poet and the icon of creativity and innovative meanings. He was born in Najd. He opened a new horizon in poetry and creativity. His mualllaqa was the first in its genre. He sought to avenge his father's death, but failed. He died in c. 80 BH/545 AD.
Tarafa ibn Al-Abd
Tarafa ibn Al-Abd, author of the famous muallaqa, secured a high rank among the great poets while still a young man. He suffered unjust treatment from his relatives and was killed treacherously, while still in the flower of his youth, aged between 23-26, in Al-Ahsa in c. 60 BH/564 AD.
Al-Harith ibn Hilliza
Al-Harith ibn Hilliza Al-Yashkuri is one of the authors of muallaqat. He was wise and sagacious. He died in c. 50 BH/570 AD.
Antara ibn Shaddad
Antara ibn Shaddad belonged to Bani Abs. He was the most famous pre-Islamic Arab knight. He was a slave, but was set free because of his chivalry. He was known for his love of his cousin, Abla. He was one of the great poets and his muallaqa won him a place among the great poets. He died in c. 22 BH/600 AD.
Zuhair ibn Abi Sulma
Zuhair ibn Abi Sulma, the sage of pre-Islamic poets, was the chief of his tribe. His poetry is full of wisdom. He eulogized Harim ibn Sinan, who paid the blood-money to end the Dahis and Al-Ghabra War. Some major critics considered him the greatest Arab poet. He died in c. 13 BH/609 AD.
Labeed ibn Rabee'a
Labeed ibn Rabee'a was a companion of the Prophet. He was also a knight and poet. He had lived a long life before the advent of Islam. He came to the Prophet () and embraced Islam. He died in c. 41 AH/661 AD.
Ziyad ibn Muawiyah
Al-Nabigha Al-Dhubyani was one the greatest pre-Islamic poets. He joined the courts of kings and eulogized them. He was a referee of poets in Ukaz Bazaar. He lived a long life and died in c. 18 BH/604 AD.
Abeed ibn Al-Abras
Abeed ibn Al-Abras was a shrewd and wise man. Being one of the great authors of muallaqat, he was also a major pre-Islamic poet. He lived a long life, and was killed in c. 25 BH/600 AD.
Kuthayyer bin Abdurrahman
Umayyad
His name was Kuthayyir bin Abdurrahman, and he was one of the preeminent poets during the Umayyad Period. He came to be known for his love of Azzah to the extent that he was called after her.
