Kuthayyer bin Abdurrahman

Kuthayyer Azzah

His name was Kuthayyer bin Abdurrahman Al-Khuza'i, from Madinah . 
He was dubbed al-Milhi, after his tribe, Bani Maleeh . 
He was also called after Azzah because his love for her was widely known . 
He was considered one of the greatest poets in the Umayyad Era . 
He was so liked to the extent he was favored over other poets . 
He appeared at the court of Abdulmalik bin Marwan, who disdained his appearance because he was short and ugly . 
However, when he found him to be a great poet, Abdulmalik honored and rewarded him . 
So, he extolled him and became his panegyrist and Bani Marwan's poet laureate . 
Many stories about his love for Azzah were recorded, but he was a chaste lover who did not intend to have a sexual relation with her . 
He and Ikramah, the mawla (freedman) of bin Abbas, died in Madinah on the same day in 105AH/723AD . 
It was said, "Today, the greatest jurisprudence scholar and the finest poet died .
